Brazosport survives mistakes, penalties to edge Friendswood By Tom Green Facts Correspondent FREEPORT The Brazosport Exporters overcame a penalty-plagued game full of mental mistakes to beat the Friendswood Mustangs 26-21.

"We had too many penalties due to our mental errors and showboating," said head coach Fred Bolton. The Ships defended their goal line all the way up until four minutes left in the first quarter, when the Friendswood quarterback, Greg McAdads threw a shovel pass to running back Philip Molis for a touchdown. The extra point try failed and the score was 6-0. Then the Ships came back with a 32-yard drive. With 40 seconds left in the first quarter, Ships quarterback Andrew Coins handed off to running back C.

Lament White. With a good SHIPS 26, MUSTANGS 21 block from running back Sean White, Lamont White ran into the end zone for a Brazosport touchdown. Michael Jackson kicked it through the posts for a first quarter score of 7-6. The Mustangs continued to challenge the Ships with an 84-yard drive. On Brazosport's five yard line, with 2:39 seconds left in the half, McAdads passed to Molis for a touchdown.

McAdads threw to wide receiver, Shane Troka for an extra two points, leaving Friendswood with a 14-7 lead at the half. The second half almost unraveled for the Ships when they began to accumulate penalties. The Mustangs could still not hold the Ships in the third quarter, and Goins threw a seven-yard pass to Eric White for a touchdown, making it a 14-14 tie. See EXPORTERS Page 3B BUGS 21, RANGERS 18 Timely tackle preserves win for B'wood By Jim Carley The Brazosport Facts ROSENBERG High drama unfolded at Traylor Stadium Friday night and all Brazoswood's Grant Heard could do was watch. It was the last play of the game with the Buccaneers ahead by three and Rosenberg Terry on the Bucs' seven-yard line.

As the final four seconds ticked off the clock, Ranger quarterback Mario Garcia threw a flare pass in the left flat to star running back Brandon Rainer. The only thing between Rainer and a Terry victory was Bucs cor- nerback Josh McMillan. And Heard felt pretty helpless. "I saw the back swinging out," said Heard, a free safety who was too far from the play. "I was just praying to God that someone would get him and hang on for dear life." That someone was going to be McMillan or no one.

"I was thinking, 'I've got to stop him, I've got to stop him'," McMillan said. "I was thinking the whole team was counting on me and I couldn't let them down." And he didn't. McMillan tackled the powerful Rainer at the two-yard line as the clock expired, giving Brazoswood a 21-18 victory and pushing the Bucs to 3-0 for the first time since 1986. Terry, which went to the Class 5A playoffs last year, slipped to 2-1. "It was the play of my life," McMillan said.

"I've never been in on a play like that. At first, I didn't realize what was happening. Then I saw the pass going to him and I knew I had to stop it." It was a wild finish for the Buccaneers. They had jumped to a 14-0 lead behind the brilliant execution of sophomore quarterback James Jurries and the dazzling power running of senior Eric Daniels. Brazoswood stretched that lead to 21-6 early in the second quarter.

Daniels had a 47-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, while wide receiver Tony Jenkins broke a reverse around left end for 33 yards and the second touchdown. When Jurries slipped over from one yard out for the third TD late in the second quarter, it was starting to look like this game might be a rout. For Coach Jim Arthur, it was starting to look too much like "Scoring early like that may have hurt us," Arthur said. "I think we relaxed a little after that. We had chances to put them away and didn't." Instead, it was all Terry in the second half.

The Rangers came back to score two consecutive touchdowns late in the third and early in the fourth period. The first was a 17-yard pass from Garcia to Phillip Zurek with 2:16 left in the third. The Rangers then recovered a Buc fumble on the ensuing kickoff and marched 32 yards in six quick plays with Rickey Ray going over from four yards out. What saved Brazoswood was Terry's inability to score extra points. The Rangers tried a swinging-gate play for the extra point after their first TD (a 25-yard run by Ray) and Rainer was stopped short by a yard.

Terry tried a pass from Garcia to Rainer on its second PAT and also failed. The extra-point kick on the third TD was wide right. See BUCS Page 3B Running game, swarming defense does the trick for Sweeny By Anthony Maenza The Brazosport Facts SWEENY Totally dominating. That's what the Sweeny Bulldogs were Friday night as they rolled over the Wharton Tigers 41-7 at Bulldog Stadium. Sweeny (3-0) chalked up 417 yards of total offense whiie the Bulldog defense limited Wharton to 91 yards in the contest.

"There weren't many down moments in this game," Senior linebacker Cory Pierce said. "We had a good week a of practice and so we knew we could go out and beat this team." Peirce grabbed two of the five turnovers the Bulldogs picked up from Wharton (0-3). "On all sides of the ball, we executed well," Bulldog coach Tommy Zajicek said. Wharton had barely gotten off the bus when Sweeny struck for its first touchdown. On the first play from scrimmage, BULLDOGS 41, TIGERS 7 Kiemont Wright rambled 73 yards to the Tigers three yard line.

One play later David Williams went over to give the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead only 36 seconds into the game. The 73-yard jaunt was part of a 172 yard performance by Wright in the first half and a 194 yard performance for the game. After that, things got worse for Wharton in the first half. On the ensuing kickoff, Sweeny recovered a Wharton fumble on the Tigers 34, but gave Wharton new life when Bulldog receiver Eugene Johnson lost the ball at the Wharton goal line and was recovered in the end zone by the Tigers. Wharton wasn't safe for long.

After going three downs and out, Tigers punter Charles Ciruti lost the handle on the snap in his end zone, where he covered the ball to give Sweeny a safety and an 8-0 lead with 5:30 left in the first quarter. The Bulldogs kept things rolling after Wharton's free kick after the safety. Going 47 yards, Wright capped a 10- play drive with a two-yard run. Harry Fields' kick upped the Sweeny advantage to 15-0 with 1:02 left in the opening period. It wasn't long after that the Bulldogs got the ball back again.

Mark Washington picked off a pass by Wharton's Eliab Crow and returned it to the Tigers 36. An illegal block penalty on the play backed the Bulldogs up to their own 49, but that didn't matter. Sweeny drove the 51 yards for the score, with Wright completing things with a four-yard touchdown run with 8:23 left in the second quarter to give the Bulldogs a 21-0 lead that stood at the half. Sweeny's offense didn't have all the fun the first half. The Bulldog defense held Wharton to 17 total yards and two first downs.

Defensive linemen Cedric Woodard, David Woolley and Andy Young spent most of their time in the Wharton back- field in the half, stifling the Tigers running attack and holding them to eight-yards rushing. "We were getting some good penetration," Zajicek said. "Cedric, David and Andy did a good job." Sweeny started off the second half the way they started the first: scoring on the first drive. And the Bulldogs did it quickly, too, using only two plays to hit paydirt. Washington completed the 53-yard drive with a 44-yard touchdown run with 9:28 left in the third quarter.

Sweeny's defense kept up the pressure on Wharton's next drive as linebacker Cory Pierce intercepted a Crow pass and returned it to the Tigers 40. A few plays later, Wright went in from one-yard out to give the Bulldogs a 34-0 lead with 2:51 left in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Pierce struck again for the 'Dog defense, this time recovering a Tiger fumble at the Wharton 25. A play later, Juston Smith got into the scoring act with a 25-yard touchdown run with 11:29 left in the game. Watson stifles Astros' bats to give St.

Louis 3-0 win HOUSTON (AP) -At this time of the year, any loss seems crushing to the Houston Astros. "At this point, it doesn't matter about the mathematics if we lose. We've just got to win every game," Doug Drabek said after Friday night's 3-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. Allen Watson allowed four hits in eight innings and Ray Lankford hit a two-run homer.

The Astros, who had won five their previous six games, began the night a half-game 'behind Los Angeles in the wild-card race. "This was a tough one. We really never gpt anything going," Astros second baseman Craig Biggio said. "We'll just have to come tomorrow. The only game we care about now is tomorrow's." The Wildcats have gone to an all-out shotgun offense this year, with the quarterback never moving up under center. But, unlike most shotgun offenses that use it to employ more passing, Angleton uses it to fool defenses and keep them guessing about who will be taking the snap. Deception was the rule of the day Friday and Angleton's fakes had fans and press box reporters wondering who was carrying the ball. It worked perfectly. Not only were onlookers See ANGLETON Page 3B ROUGHNECKS 26, COUGARS 6 Columbia snaps losing streak CROSBY For the first time in 24 games the Columbia Roughnecks pulled off a victory- Using some powerful running by Jessie Simple and Dalton Breaux, the Roughnecks manhandled the Crosby Cougars 26-6 Friday night.

"It was great," Columbia coach Leonard Villarreal said. "We got after it and put everything together and took it to them." Simple rushed for 125 yards on nine carries and two touchdowns while Breaux had 19 carries for 74 yards and one touchdown. Four minutes into the game, Columbia took a 6-0 lead when Breaux broke loose for a 12- yard touchdown run. The touchdown was set up after the Columbia defense recovered a fumble at the Crosby 35. In the second quarter, Columbia got on the board again when Cody Jensen caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Wade Mehaffey to give the Roughnecks a 12-0 lead.

A 75-yard touchdown run by Crosby cut the Roughneck lead to just 12-6 at the half. On the second play of the second half for Columbia, Simple rambled 75 yards for a touchdown. A two-point conversion by Breaux put the Roughnecks up 20-6. Then with 3 minutes left to play in the game, Simple broke loose for 25-yard touchdown run to put the cap on the win. It was the first win for Villarreal since he became head coach last year.

'This was my 13th game as head coach," he said. "I guess it was lucky 13 for me." I.
